Pregnancy Guide for Couples: Week 13

Welcome to the second trimester, (most) everyone's favorite trimester. Nausea relief is around the corner!

What’s Going on with Baby

At Week 13, your baby is the size of a light bulb!

At the beginning of the second trimester, you may be surprised to know that your baby is already making urine. They also swallow some amniotic fluid at this time. Their bones are becoming more ossified (hardened) and will continue to harden and grow throughout the pregnancy. Other ways your baby is growing include:

  • Baby’s eyelids are still fused shut as a way of protection during development.

  • Vocal cords are beginning to form.

  • Your little one’s head is starting to get more in balance with the rest of their little body.

What’s Going on with Mom

Yay, second trimester! Don't be discouraged if you’re not feeling relief from your early pregnancy symptoms yet. Unfortunately, there’s not a magical switch that flips at Week 13, but you will hopefully begin to feel more like yourself sooner rather than later. On the other hand, if you are starting to feel better, you may be noticing:

  • More energy

  • Less nausea

  • Bloating and constipation improving

  • Breasts not as tender

Remember, some moms experience early pregnancy symptoms longer than others. Some symptoms, like bloating, may continue throughout the entire pregnancy.

What’s going on with Partner

Do you have a plan for paternity leave yet? Now is an excellent time to start researching your options. If you are currently working, check with your HR department to inquire if they offer paternity leave to new fathers and, if so, how long you can take. Here are some other questions to ask:

  • Is paternity leave paid or unpaid?

  • What is the process for requesting paternity leave?

  • Can I use other types of leave in conjunction with paternity leave?

  • Do I need to provide any documentation?

  • Can I take intermittent or flexible paternity leave?

Remember to notify your workplace of future paternity leave plans as early as possible.
